One of my favorite education related quotes is from Mark Twain who said, "Don't let school interfere with your education". My goal and focus as an educator are to disrupt the education norm to create systems that promote balance in order for all children to reach their goals. Unfortunately, not all children are connected to the traditional education system and I believe far too frequently, well intentioned education systems interfere with the knowledge journey of our children and our society.

I too have a non-traditional path as an educator. I'm a product of a traditional suburban school system in Denver Colorado (Go Broncos!), but I frequently missed school due to extra-curricular activities. I raced motorcycles for years and my social connections were outside of school. School was simply something I "had" to do. I graduated high school with little more than a plan to keep racing and avoid injury. Eventually,  I moved out of the country and lived in Italy for 2 years. While in Italy I learned to speak Italian and more importantly discovered (or uncovered) my own capability to learn.

I have attended 3 major universities in Utah, Oregon, and California and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Studio Art. While in college and after graduation, I worked in the screen printing, sign making, and the graphic design industries and learned to speak Spanish. However, I felt a pull to education. I always worked as a volunteer youth basketball coach and with various youth groups in the communities where I lived. I eventually became a substitute teacher, and the rest is history.

I have worked in education for 18 years. I have been a classroom art teacher, independent study teacher, English learner coordinator, new teacher trainer, quality control auditor (boring independent study stuff), and many more education related duties. In 2008, I became the site administrator of the Elk Grove Charter School, and then completed a master's degree in education with a focus on multi-culturalism. I then became the vice principal, and now principal of Elk Grove Charter School.

I love the charter school movement and the Elk Grove Charter School. During my time at EGCS, I have seen the school progress from 11 ISP teachers in a single rented room above a salon to a school with a stand-alone building and a clear vision of the future. I love how EGCS can meet the needs of such a diverse student body and community. As an educator, I look forward to the future, with a focus on the present, and equipped with the knowledge of the past.

Vice Principal Mr. Tosta

I am proud to say that this is my 7th year as the Vice Principal here at EGCS. I look forward to coming to "work" everyday due to our amazing staff, supportive families, and even better students. This is my 21th year in education and prior to becoming an administrator, I was an elementary school PE Teacher and a Middle School counselor. Outside of school, I love spending time with my wife and 2 kids (Logan 20 and Avery 18). I am also a rabid Sacramento Kings fan (since day 1), a coffee Connoisseur (minimum of 2 cups of the finest of beans a day), and.......a Sacramento Foodie (hit me up for recommendations). I pride myself in getting to know our students and families, so if we haven't met.....Please swing by the office to say hi. Go Falcons!
